Here's a good youtube video of Clare Gledhill, a GUE instructor, showing students how to set off an smb with a spool rather than a reel. I wish I had buoyancy like hers !

Well the whole thing around it is that you should be able to deploy it in this position because you will more than likely be doing this mid water rather than on the floor. I think she's taking her time too because she's showing students how it's done. I've done it like this and you usually get the bag and the spool out while you're still swimming along, putting it together is quick enough then just fill it with air like usual and off you go.
